Knowing what I know now, here’s how I’d plan an epic itinerary for Koh Rong Samloem:
- Day 1: M’Pay Bay—explore village and jungle
- Day 2: M’Pay Bay—hike to Clear Water Bay, sunset at The Cliff
- Day 3: Saracen Bay—chill on Saracen Beach
- Day 4: Saracen Bay—yolo hiking loop to lighthouse, Military Beach, and Lazy Beach (see video above for details)
- Day 5: Saracen Bay—booze cruise or other tour
- Day 6: Sunset Beach—overnight trip to Sunset Beach (store big luggage on Saracen)
- Day 7: Saracen Bay—return to Saracen and chill on the other end of the beach
After that, I’d head over to Koh Rong to explore for another week.
How Do You Get From Koh Rong to Koh Rong Samloem (And Vice Versa)?
Koh Rong Islands Transfer Ferry
It’s fair to say you want to visit both islands, especially considering they are sister islands that are not far apart. To get from Koh Rong to Koh Rong Samloem (or vice versa), you can purchase a transfer ticket with your main ferry ticket either at Serendipity Beach Pier or when you are on either of the Koh Rong islands for more flexibility.
The Koh Rong transfer ticket costs an extra $5 one way via the pick-up and landing points at Saracen Bay (Koh Rong Samloem) and Koh Touch (Koh Rong).
Long-Tail Boat Hire
If you want to travel slowly and in the local style, hire a private longtail boat. This traditional wooden Khmer fishing boat is a great way to support the locals, although it is only cost-effective at around $20+ if you are in a group.
Getting Around the Island

In the future, they are planning to build a paved road that connects every part of the island…so get there before the crowds do!
From Saracen, all the main attractions are within walking distance. The only place you’ll have to boat to is M’Pay Bay (supposedly there is a hiking path, but nobody can find it and I hear it’s super sketch…as in, the-last-tourist-to-try-it-got-lost-in-the-jungle-for-days type of sketch).

There are a few main areas on the island that you can stay at. Now, many new hotels and hostels have popped up all around the island. These are the main areas you can stay at:
Saracen Bay
The most populated area is Saracen Bay, where the ferry drops you off. When we first visited the island, all of the accommodation was located here. There are a variety of hostels, hotels and resorts along the beach, as well as adjoining restaurants and bars.
M’pai Bay (also spelled as M’pei Bay or M’phey Bei)
With a more backpacker feel, M’Pai Bay has a good selection of hostels and budget accommodation. This is where you’ll find a bit more of an active nightlife, that accompanies the backpacker crowd.
Sunset Beach
A much quieter area with just a few options for accommodation and food. This is a good option if you’re looking for the undeveloped, rustic vibes of Saracen Bay from a few years ago.
Koh Rong Samloem Mid-Range Accommodation
Top Pick – SunBoo Beach Bungalows
These set of bunglows on Sunset Bay, the more secluded side of Koh Rong Samloem. The bay is calm and perfect for swimming and snorkeling. A bungalow for two with garden view will cost about $55USD/night.
Sweet Dreams
When we first visited this accommodation, it was mostly a few tents scattered along the sand that you could rent for $5/person. There was no electricity or running water, but But when you woke up in the morning, one unzip of the tent revealed a stunning view of turquoise water. Doesn’t get much better than that. With more development, Sweet Dreams has now become a cluster of bungalows
If nothing’s changed, the business is run by a few Russian couples. Say hi to Alex for us, he’s the tan Russian in short shorts and a fanny pack happily chatting away with customers. A standard bungalow with a fan for 2 people will cost you $50USD/ night.
Samloem, Sanloem or Saloem
In the Cambodian language known as Khmer the word ‘Koh’ means island. There are two main theories behind the word ‘Rong’ with the first being that it was simply someone’s name and the other theory relates to the Cambodian word for ‘cave’. As for ‘Samloem’, while it is the most frequent spelling used, it has no meaning in Khmer whilst ‘Sanloem’ translates in English to ‘far away’ and is seen on some, but certainly not all, official Cambodian maps

The different spellings occur as converting Khmer to romanised script is subjective due to differences in the way consonants are vocalised. That said, picking up a few useful words is simple and often will produce a wide and genuine smile from the warm Cambodian people

В то время как в Китае у нас с Б. не было проблем говорить по-китайски, а во Вьетнаме экскурсоводом стал он, то когда мы решили отправиться еще в Камбоджу, поняли, что она для нас будет самой экзотической страной из всех, что мы посетили – просто потому, что мы не умеем по-кхмерски.
Проживание на острове
Мы остановились в отеле Sok Heng Guesthouse, что в пяти минутах пешком от пирса. Комната досталась самая простая. Нужно было бронировать Suite, так как троем с ребенком было нам тесно. Кровать, столик, душевая, телевизор под потолком. Утром завтраки. Все просто, но чистенько. Грязь вы сами затащите. Здесь такой мелкий песок, что он не вытряхивается ни из головы, ни из одежды, ни с пяток.
Также были обнаружены на острове различные бунгало попроще с общим душем в отдельном корпусе и общим туалетом. Самый демократичный, но тоже не недешевый вариант – палатка. Прямо на берегу за 13-15 баксов за ночь. Все удобства отдельно. Зато море вот оно. Свежий воздух, мягкий надувной матрас и розетка внутри для ваших гаджетов.
Есть парочка лакшери отелей. Мы заходили перекусить пиццу в ресторан отеля The Royal Sands Koh Rong (500 долларов за ночь). Здесь жили в основном молодожены китайцы в медовом месяце и целый день с нанятым фотографом они устраивали фотосессии на берегу, меняя позы, наряды и напитки. Long Set Resort и Koh Rong Hill resorts более доступны. Всего 80-100 долларов за ночь, природа одинаковая, что в ресорте, что в палатке через 100-200 метров.

Diving on Koh Rong Samloem Island
Koh Rong Samloem Island is a popular choice for divers. There are a few diving shops on the island and the experience is supposed to be really special. Unlike some areas of Southeast Asia, this spot has been well preserved, so there’s a better chance of seeing a greater variety of sea life. Whether you’re getting PADI certified or you’re an experienced diver, you’ll definitely find a spot under the surface that peaks your interest. EcoSea Diver in M’pai Bay has come recommended as a safe and eco-friendly dive shop.
Water Sports on Koh Rong Samloem
For non-divers, there are some good spots for snorkeling. Most hotels will rent snorkels for about $5. You can walk across the island for about 20 minutes, through the jungle to Lazy Beach or organize a boat trip to offshore along Saracen Bay or Koh Koun. The best snorkeling is found on the Western side of Samloem. The Dive Shop in Seracen Bay has daily snorkeling trips for $25, including lunch. Travelers that prefer to stay on top of the water can rent a kayak or stand up paddle board and explore the bay. Most hotels will have kayaks or SUP boards available for free or a small rental fee.
Explore the Interior
If you get sick of the beach (just kidding! That’s not possible), head into the interior of the island. You can take a few different trails and explore other parts of the Samloem. The middle of the island is a thick, lush jungle and is even more undeveloped than the coast. A popular trek is hiking from Saracen Bay to the Samloem lighthouse. It takes about 4 hours round trip but the reward is stunning views from the lighthouse. Make sure you time your trek to get back before dark. It can get confusing in there!
Koh Rong Samloem Full Moon Party
Koh Rong Samloem may still be a somewhat undiscovered island, but there’s no shortage of backpackers. And where there are backpackers there is always a party! The Koh Rong Samloem full moon party takes place at Camp Good Vibz in the jungle, not far from the Beach Island Resort, in between Sunset Beach and Saracen Bay.
It’s chill, and has a more low key, rustic vibe compared to the Koh Phangan half moon party and full moon party in Thailand. The organizers also throw a black moon party, so you can get your big party fix twice per month.
Lay on the Beach
The beach along Saracen Bay is a long strip of white sand dotted with swings, beach beds and chairs to spend your day relaxing in the sun. The ocean is so flat you can walk in the water for a hundred meters before actually getting your hips wet. Your accommodation may not have strawberry daiquiris or an infinity pool, but Koh Rong Samloem Island is as close you’ll get to a luxury beach resort for $9 per night.
Although it’s grown much more touristy since our first visit, Koh Rong Samloem island is still an undiscovered treasure in Southeast Asia. Compared to the overcrowded beaches of Thailand, Samloem is quiet and relatively untouched. The underdevelopment gives you a feel for the raw natural beauty of Cambodia. There’s no high-rise resorts to block your view of the ocean and at night when some of the hotels turn off their electricity, you’re left with a sky full of brilliant stars.

Я разведал тропу на Sok San и мы каждое утро после завтрака уходили через джунгли на пустыный пляж. После 11 утра подбирались и другие интузиасты. После 12 часов подплывали лодки, катающие китайских туристов вокруг острова. Остальное время больше 10-15 человек не наберется.
Тропа через горы начинается прямо от нашего отеля Sok Heng – подымаетесь метров 80 по дороге, и ни в коем случае не идете налево по дороге. Нужно подыматься по незаметной тропе, заваленой дровами в гору. Там вы идете по перевалу несколько километров. А дальше начинается экстрим – спуск почти 90 градусов на противоположный берег острова. Крепко держитесь за лианы и веревки. Но не словите кусты с колючками. Обязательно одевайте удобные кеды или кроссовки. В шлепанцах спускаться тяжело.

Where to Stay in Koh Rong Samloem
If you’ve used our guides before, you may have noticed that our accommodation picks normally go towards the end of our posts. However, the overall experience you have on Koh Rong Samloem really depends on which beach you pick for your base and even which spot you pick on that beach, with different bays offering up very different accommodations to a very different clientele. There are small-scale but modern resorts and expensive minimalist air-con rooms, to rustic beach bungalows and a smattering of basic hostels. All the Koh Rong Samloem beaches are beautiful, but the chances are that about 75% of your time on the island is going to be spent in the sea or on the sand of just one, so choosing the right beach to have right on your doorstep is important – especially as the islands’s half-dozen bays are only accessible via a 30 minute walk or a boat trip between each other.
That’s why it’s necessary to talk about where to stay on Koh Rong Samloem at the beginning rather than the end of this guide!
We should also note that, based on our visit in early 2020, the island’s infrastructure has undergone quite a bit of development over last few years. That isn’t something to be concerned about vis-a-vis ruining the experience (yet!), but does mean that pretty most accommodation now offers pretty decent free wi-fi and electricity 24/7 off of generators (the exception to this is Sunset Beach where a number of places don’t have wifi, and only offer power in the evening hours). It also means Koh Rong Samloem is now an attractive option for couples looking to stay somewhere for $50+ a night, as well as budget backpackers looking for a $5 dorm bed.
How to Get to Koh Rong Samloem Via Sihanoukville
Love it or hate it, Sihanoukville is the gateway to Koh Rong Samloem (and Koh Rong) island, and for that reason alone, so you are going to pass through here regardless. There’s only one way to get here – cruising those crystal clear waters by ferry or via a fun all-day boat trip.
Sihanoukville to Koh Rong Samloem by ferry takes just 45 minutes. Boats leave from Serendipity Beach Pier (Ochheutea Pier) and arrive at Saracen Bay on Koh Rong Samloem.
Tickets prices are around $20 – $25 return depending on which of the ferry companies you use (some are faster than others) and what time of the day you travel (some have departures up to four times a day).

Book directly at Sihanoukville Port, although you should book in advance to secure a space, which you can also do on the established transport portal 12Go Asia. Tickets to Koh Rong from Sihanoukville are the same price and timings, leaving Serendipity Beach Pier (Ochheutea Pier) and arriving at Koh Touch Pier on Koh Rong.

Staying in Sihanoukville?
While I’m not a fan of Sihanoukville, staying there for a night or two days on-route to the islands might be inevitable. I did have a great few days there with fellow backpackers I had met.
By day, you can find pockets of calm in what used to be a sleepy Cambodian town over a decade ago. However, by night it is mostly sleazy and debauched, bar workers walk around town like zombies, and there are far too many stories of ladyboys robbing male westerners. Much of the bad atmosphere also comes from the ruin of hedonistic travellers with no thought for culture or custom.
Note that Serendipity Beach is the main beach that attracts the loud and full of drunk, ill-behaving tourists and is, by default, a significant target area for things to happen and where things regularly have happened. Having your wits about you and being on your guard, like anywhere in the world, is the best way to stay safe. Otres Beach and other surrounding beaches are quieter and not lined with bars, so there are plenty of areas to escape the madness and enjoy a calmer landscape.

Instead, here are some other items you’ll be glad you packed for the island:
Headlamp – Nothing worse than walking through the jungle in the dark, praying you don’t step on a scorpion.Bug spray – You’ll wanna carry this with you at all times. Skeeters and sand flies can be brutal depending on where you’re staying. Sun screen – This will cost your dearly if you have to buy it on the island.Hat – To protect your face from drying up like a raisin in the Cambodian sun.Powerbank – You’re gonna be taking lots of photos…wouldn’t want that battery to die early!Gopro (or cheap alternative ) – Great for photoshoots with fishies in the clear water.Xenvo lens – This handy lens will transform how you take pics with your phone. We never leave home without it.Dry bag – On the island, when it rains, it pours. Keep your valuables dry. Waterproof phone pouch – Super handy for kayaking and paddleboarding.Selfie stick with tripod – Tripods are clutch for taking amazing beach photos of yourself.Fanny pack – I wear this every day. Way more comfortable than carrying a big backpack or jamming your pockets full of stuff.Kindle – Nothing more relaxing than hammocking on the beach reading your Kindle.Bluetooth speaker – Kills awkward silences. We used this every day on the island. First aid kit + medicine – Don’t expect to find many first aid supplies on the island. It’s best to bring your own kit just in case.Ear plugs – Depending on where you’re staying, you might have a lot of noise at night.Snacks from Sihanoukville – Slash your expenses by stocking up on snacks before you get here.
